EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior Zach Jones' two-out, walk-off single in the 10th inning led Northwestern to a 5-4 win over crosstown rival Chicago State on Wednesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.
The Cougars started the contest scratching as senior Mattingly Romanin sent a home run to left field on just the second pitch of the game off sophomore starter Joe Schindler.
The Wildcats, however, strung together a four-run rally in the bottom of the third to take control of the game. Freshman Connor Lind led off the frame with a single to center field and Northwestern drew a pair of walks to load the bases. Sophomore Joe Hoscheit followed up with a two-run single to open scoring for NU before freshman JR Reimer singled to right center to drive home the 'Cats third run of the day. Senior Mike Trucco used a base hit to score Hoscheit and Northwestern shut the door on the inning with a 4-1 lead.
The Cougars added runs in the visitor's side of the fourth and seventh innings and eventually evened the score, 4-4, in the eighth. Senior Jordan Stroschein led off the frame with a base hit and plated the equalizer on an RBI fielder's choice to force the game into extra innings.
After two scoreless frames, the Wildcats closed out the game in walk off fashion when Jones scored senior Luke Dauch from third.
Junior Jake Stolley earned the win for Chicago's Big Ten Team after allowing just one hit and fanning three Cougars in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
