LINCOLN, Neb. -- Much like Friday's opener in this Big Ten series between the third- and fourth-place teams in the conference, Nebraska scored all of its runs in a single inning Saturday and rode that outburst to a 9-5 win over Northwestern.
Northwestern (20-17, 8-5 Big Ten) and Nebraska (25-18, 12-4 Big Ten) conclude their series at 3 p.m. CT tomorrow, Sunday, April 19, live on BTN. This first pitch is three hours later than the originally publicized noon CT start time.
In the game, Northwestern freshman Sabrina Rabin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) went 4-for-4 with four stolen bases to tie Emily Allard's school single-game record for steals set the first time in 2010 and matched in 2011.
Northwestern senior Olivia Duehr (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) made the very first start of her Northwestern career and her third collegiate appearance overall in the circle in this game. An outstanding pitcher in high school, Duehr volunteered to add depth to the Wildcats' pitching staff when sophomore standout Nicole Bond (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) went down with a season-ending injury prior to the year. She held the Huskers scoreless in five of the six innings she threw in a complete-game effort.
Rabin led off the game with an infield single and stole second base, but remained there when the inning ended thanks to a pair of outstanding plays at third. One play in particular saw the fielder dive to her left to glove a one-hop laser off the bat of Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger), saving a run.
A pair of Huskers reached against Duehr in the first frame, but she stranded them with help in part from Rabin, who tracked down a hard-hit shot in the right-centerfield gap.
Northwestern took the lead in the top of the second. Senior Julia Kuhn (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) banged a double down the left-field line to start the inning and freshman Abbey Boyd (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) came in to run for her. Two outs later, Boyd still was at second base when freshman Brooke Marquez (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica) stroked a single back through the middle to bring Boyd racing around to the plate for a 1-0 Wildcats' edge.
Northwestern then added to its total in the top of the third, beginning once again with a Rabin single and steal of second base. A Filler flyout to deep right center pushed Rabin to third with two outs before Sammy Nettling (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) ripped a single back through the middle to make it a 2-0 game. Kuhn followed Nettling's hit with her second double of the game, a booming shot that hit the base of the barrier in center to push Nettling to third and Nebraska starter Kaylan Jablonski out of the circle. The Huskers reliever, Cassie McClure, walked her counterpart Duehr to load the bases before getting a grounder right to her second baseman to keep the rally to a single run.
Duehr worked around a pair of singles in a scoreless bottom of the third, then Rabin notched her third infield single and third stolen base of the game with two outs in the top of the fourth. Unlike the previous two innings, however, no two-out RBI base hit was forthcoming.
Nebraska broke through in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game after two leadoff singles on a sacrifice fly and a one-out double. The Huskers then kept going, capping a nine-run inning with a two-out grand slam to take a 9-2 lead in the contest.
Two diving catches robbed Northwestern of hits in the top of the fifth before Nebraska got a leadoff walk in the bottom half. Duehr, however, bounced back to get three-straight outs to send the game to the sixth inning.
In that sixth, Duehr led off with a double inside the third-base bag before pinch hitter Alcy Bush (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) followed with a pinch-hit double of her own to push pinch runner Krista Williams (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) to third. Marquez drove a ball to left for a sacrifice fly that brought Williams home, then Fran Strub (Coralville, Iowa/Clear Creek Amana) smashed a pitch to center that the fielder left her feet to catch horizontally for the second out of the inning.
Undeterred by the latest in a string of highlight reel Nebraska defensive plays, Rabin brought home LeBeau with her fourth hit of the contest before...you guessed it...she stole second base for the fourth time. Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) made the steal count, dumping a single into left field that brought Rabin around to cut the Nebraska lead to 9-5.
The Huskers then elected to bring their third pitcher in the game in the form of game one winner Emily Lockman. She walked Filler before getting a hard groundout to third to end the rally.
In the bottom of the sixth, Duehr worked around a two-out walk to again keep Nebraska off the board and the send the game to the seventh, but another Northwestern rally was not forthcoming.
Having never pitched more than one inning in her career prior to this start, Duehr (0-1) fought her way through a complete-game effort. She allowed runs in just one inning in the game, unfortunately it was the inning that just would not end. Duehr's final line was nine runs allowed on nine hits and four walks with a strikeout. To her credit, after the nine-run fourth, Duehr retired six of the final seven batters she faced to allow the Wildcats' offense to cut into the Huskers' lead.
In addition to Rabin's career day with four hits, four steals and two runs scored, Kuhn had a pair of doubles and Marquez drove in two for the Wildcats.
