CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois scored eight runs in the first three innings to put Northwestern in a deep hole and never looked back as the Wildcats fell in the finale of a three-game series at Illinois Field on Sunday afternoon, 17-2.

The Fighting Illini struck first, plating three runs in the top of the first. Northwestern was able to cut the deficit to just one, adding a run in the first and second innings, but Illinois used a five-run inning in the top of the third to draw an early 8-2 lead.

The Wildcats scattered 11 hits throughout the game, including a pair of singles from senior Reid Hunter.

Northwestern used three pitchers, including senior Brandon Magallones who took the loss for the `Cats. Junior Reed Mason and classmate Joke Stolley also saw time on the mound.

Senior John Kravetz earned the win for the Fighting Illini after allowing just two runs on eight hits in six innings pitched.

Next up, the Wildcats continue Big Ten play with a three-game set at Michigan State, beginning Friday, April 10. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. CST. The series finale, scheduled for Sunday, April 12, will be broadcast live on BTN Plus.
