EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern cross country team has a busy schedule ahead as the `Cats continue their outdoor season with a split-squad weekend. NU will send a total of 14 student-athletes to competitions at Stanford, San Francisco State and University of Chicago.
Sophomore Andrea Ostenso and Jena Pianin will represent the Wildcats at the 40th Stanford Track and Field Invitational on Friday, April 3. Pianin will make an appearance in the 5,000m race, while Ostenso will compete in the 10,000m event.
Over 3,000 athletes from more than 100 universities are expected to compete, including Big Ten members Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Purdue.
Also on the west coast, six Northwestern runners are slated to compete at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, hosted by San Francisco State University. Elena Barham will race in the 10,000m run before Isabel Seidel, Rachel Weathered, Allison Jacobsen, Mallory Abel and Renee Wellman wrap up the meet in the 5,000m race.
The rest of the squad will remain in the Chicago to participate at the Ted Haydon Invitational, hosted by University of Chicago, on Saturday, April 4. Victoria Bianco will represent the `Cats in the 1,500m run, while Sara Coffey, Elena Miller, Brooke Pigneri, Hannah Rose and Ellen Schmitz battle in the 3,000m event.
LAST TIME OUT
Ostenso maintained her momentum from a sterling indoor season, posting the second-fastest time in the women's 5,000m field last weekend at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays. With a mark of 16:35.31, Ostenso is now ranked seventh in the West Region and 27th nationally.
Barham was the second-fastest `Cat in the 5,000m field with a mark of 17:27.07, while Abel finished third among the squad at 17:54.26. In the 1,500m race, Seidel finished among the Top-20 with a time of 4:39.93, while Wheathered finished just off her hip at 4:40.26.
On Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats wrapped up the competition in the Women's Distance Medley Relay. Ostenso, Pianin, Seidel and Weathered combined to finish the race in fourth place with a time of 11:54.91.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Wildcats continue their nonstop outdoor schedule on Friday, April 10, at the Chicagoland Championships in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
