CHICAGO -- Fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI and just as many runs, tallied his third home run in four games to lead Northwestern to its third-consecutive victory with a 7-2 win over crosstown rival Chicago State.
Ruchim kicked off the non-conference matchup with a lead off triple to center field. Fifth-year senior Scott Heelan immediately followed up with a base hit to drive home his classmate and put the Wildcats on the board.
Freshman Justin Yoss, who started on the mound for NU, tossed two 1-2-3 frames to start the game. Northwestern used four pitchers as the rookie earned his first-career win after allowing just four hits in three innings along with three strikeouts. Junior Jake Stolley, redshirt-freshman Grant Peikert and sophomore Joe Hoscheit also saw time on the bump for the `Cats, combining for six scoreless innings.
A base hit in the top of the second from senior Reid Hunter triggered a four-run second inning for the `Cats. Hunter plated a run off a sacrifice bunt from rookie Connor Lind before Ruchim launched a three-run homerun to center field to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Cougars added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to chip away at the deficit, but the `Cats crossed runs in the fifth and sixth frames to claim their third-straight win.
Northwestern's game against Western Michigan - scheduled for Wednesday, April 1 - has been cancelled. The `Cats will return to action this weekend when they head to Champaign, Ill., for a three-game set against Big Ten rival Illinois.
