MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Northwestern allowed just five hits through 13 innings as the Wildcats outlasted the Minnesota Gophers, 2-1, in a classic pitcher's duel on Saturday afternoon at Siebert Field.

Sophomore Joe Schindler started the game strong for the `Cats, retiring the first three hitters of the contest. The Eugene, Oregon, native allowed just one run and one hit in six frames. Junior Reed Mason entered the game and threw six scoreless innings in relief. Mason earned his first win of the year after allowing only two hits and adding nine strikeouts. Jake Stolley entered the game in the bottom of the 13th inning and tallied his third save of the season.

Northwestern jumped on the board first in the top of the second stanza. With runners on first and second, freshman Connor Lind laid down a sacrifice bunt that put both Wildcats in scoring position. Sophomore Matt Hopfner scored on another sacrifice bunt, this time from junior Antonio Freshet, to take the lead for the Wildcats.

In the bottom of the inning, Minnesota's Toby Hanson led off with a double to right field and advance to third on a wild pitch. The Gophers evened the score when Hanson crossed on a sacrifice fly.

Both sides were held scoreless until Northwestern made noise in the top of the 13th. Fifth-year senior Scott Heelan opened the frame with a single to right field and stole second to sit in scoring position. The Gurnee, Illinois, native plated the game-winning run after crossing on an error as the Wildcats evened the series, 1-1.
