PALO ALTO, Calif. -- With a pair of players in red figures Friday during the second round of The Goodwin hosted by Stanford, NU posted a five-stroke improvement over its opening round total to move four places up the standings in the 24-team field.

The Wildcats' 3-over 283 included a 2-under 68 from freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) and a 1-under 69 courtesy of junior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee), who made a personal eight-stroke improvement from day one to day two of the event.

Northwestern began Friday on the back nine and made the turn at 6-over par as a team, but four-birdie front sides from Jamieson and Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) helped the Wildcats claw their way up the team leaderboard. NU sits 15th overall with an 11-over 571 (288-283), just five strokes behind 11th-place BYU. Northwestern is four strokes in back of a 12th-place tie between No. 8 USC and Pepperdine, and three shots shy of 14th-place San Jose State.

The 2015 Goodwin concludes tomorrow, Saturday, March 28, with the third and final round.

Wu recovered from an early bogey in his second round by firing off three-straight birdies from holes 14 through 16 to make the turn at 2-under par. He then played an even-par front nine for his 68, the fifth round in the 60s this season for the freshman. Wu is in 26th place in the tournament at even-par 140 (72-68).

Jamieson struggled to a 7-over 77 on Thursday, but he bounced back in a big way Friday. Sitting 3-over par for the round through 11 holes, Jamieson proceeded to make birdie at all three of the Stanford Golf Course's front nine par-3s while tossing in a fourth birdie at the par-5 7th for good measure. That stretch gave Jamieson a 3-under 32 coming home and a 1-under 69 for the day, helping him move up 37 spots to 82nd place with a 6-over 146 (77-69).

Negri made the turn in the second round at 4-over 39 in part due to a double bogey at the par-5 16th hole. Though he suffered two more bogeys on the front nine, his four birdies including two in his final three holes of the day helped get some strokes back for a 2-over 72. Negri now is 69th overall at 5-over 145 (73-72).

Charles Wang (Beijing, China/Sarasota Christian School) had identical nines Friday, carding two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey on each side en route to a 4-over 74. Wang now is in 90th place at 7-over 147 (73-74).

Senior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), who led Northwestern with an even-par 70 in the first round, had a rougher time in the second, signing for an 8-over 78. Lavin is in 97th position at 8-over 148 (70-78).

Meanwhile, competing an individual, freshman Sam Triplett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) was a study in grinding out pars in the second round. He had a bogey on his first hole, countered with an immediate birdie, then made 13-consecutive pars. A birdie at the 539-yard par-5 seventh hole then got him into red figures for a 1-under 69 -- his first collegiate round in the 60s. Triplett moved up 45 places in the standings to 69th at 5-over 145 (76-69).

Senior Scott Smith (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) rounded out NU's action on Friday also as an individual, shooting a 10-over 80. He now is at 14-over 154 (74-80).
