Wildcats Fall Victim to Big Inning in 9-6 Loss to Gaels

MORAGA, Calif. - The Wildcats strung together six runs in just the first three innings, but St. Mary's College put up a seven-run frame in the bottom of the fifth to defeat Northwestern, 9-6.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the top of the first when sophomore Joe Hoscheit hit a blooper to center field to drive home junior Zach Jones, who singled before advancing to second on a wild pitch. St. Mary's matched the run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, but Northwestern responded with five runs over the next two innings to take a 6-1 lead.

In the second, fifth-year senior Cody Stevens nailed a one-out double down the left-field line and was later plated by an RBI single from red-shirt freshman Grant Peikert. Northwestern added another run when fifth-year senior Kyle Ruchim slammed a double to cross Peikert.

Chicago's Big Ten Team carried its momentum into the third as the Wildcats drew three-consecutive singles to load the bases. Another base hit from senior Reid Hunter drove in a pair of runs before junior Antonio Freschet singled to right field to plate the third run of the inning.

Northwestern ran into trouble from the beginning of the fifth frame as the Gaels scored two runs off a double down the left-field line. St. Mary's followed up with a two-run single, an error plated two more and the Gaels singled in another run to cap the inning and claim a 9-6 victory.

The Wildcats will complete the their series against St. Mary's on Wednesday, March 24. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CST.
