Ostenso Leads Way As 'Cats Kick Off Outdoor Track Campaign

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Northwestern cross-country kicked off the 2015 outdoor track season with a number of strong individual efforts, and one excellent relay, this weekend at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays on the campus of the University of Alabama.

Sophomore Andrea Ostenso maintained her momentum from a sterling indoor season, posting the second-fastest time in the women's 5,000m field. The Ladysmith, Wisconsin, native finished in 16:35.31 in an event that featured runners representing schools including Alabama, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Elena Barham was the second-fastest `Cat in the 5,000m field at 17:27.07 while Mallory Abel finished third among the squad at 17:54.26. In the 1,500 race, Isabel Seidel finished among the Top-20 with a time of 4:39.93 while teammate Rachel Weathered finished just off her hip at 4:40.26.

On Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats wrapped up the competition in the Women's Distance Medley Relay. Ostenso, classmate Jena Pianin, Seidel and Weathered combined to finish the race in fourth place with a time of 11:54.91.

Northwestern will head west in two weeks to continue the outdoor track season with a pair of events in the Bay Area. The Wildcats will test themselves against exceptional fields on Saturday, April 4 in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, and the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. Another group of `Cats will compete at the Ted Haydon Invitational on the campus of the University of Chicago.
