EVANSTON, Ill. -- Ninth-ranked Northwestern returns to its own record-setting scene this Friday through Sunday, March 27-29, at Georgia's Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic hosted at the UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
One year ago at this event, Northwestern crushed the tournament record and its own school record for an 18-hole team score by piling up an 11-under 277 during the opening round of stroke play. Then-junior Hana Lee (Seoul, South Korea/Wilson (Calif.)) matched the individual NU school record with a 6-under 66 to lead the Wildcats and tie for tournament medalist honors while then-sophomore Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) carded a 3-under 69.
This unique tournament mirrors the NCAA Championships, using the first round to seed the 12-team field into brackets for match play on the final two days of the event. The top eight teams after the qualifying round will be in the championship "Red" bracket while the remaining four teams will go into the "black" bracket. All schools will play two matches Saturday and one final match Sunday.
The UGA Golf Course is the host for this 43rd annual tournament. The track will play to a 6,401-yard, par-72 layout.
The field for the 2015 edition of the Liz Murphey is stacked, featuring programs that have won 13 of the last 15 national titles while combining for 107 top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championships in the 2000s. In terms of this season, six of the current Golfstat.com top-10 teams are among the competitors. The full field comprises No. 2 USC, No. 3 South Carolina, No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Duke, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 16 Stanford, No. 23 Alabama, No. 28 Auburn, No. 33 Purdue, No. 34 Baylor and the hosts No. 74 Georgia.
Live results for this tournament will be provided by BirdieFire.com.
Northwestern is at the tail end of its spring break having played some of the country's most beautiful courses such as Secession in Beaufort, South Carolina, in preparation for the Liz Murphey. In their most recent competition, the Wildcats went wire-to-wire for their second-straight team victory at Miami's Hurricane Invitational. Freshman Hannah Kim (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) took runner-up honors for the second time this season and picked up her third Big Ten Golfer of the Week award following the event.
