EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) may have pitched just one game last week after weather shortened the Wildcats' weekend, but #KidK's no-hitter in that outing landed her the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award, announced today by the conference office.
NU made the most of the two games it played at Louisville's Softball Classic; the Wildcats outscored their two opponents 24-0 and out-hit them 32-3, which is where Wood comes in. The junior tossed the third no-hitter of her career with nine strikeouts in a 5.0-inning, 13-0 (5) run-rule victory against Ball State Sunday.
Wood, who threw two no-hitters last year as a sophomore, faced just one batter over the minimum and allowed only two batters to reach base in the game. At one point from the third through the fifth innings, she fanned six Cardinals in a row. The no-no was the 49th in NU history.
Northwestern returns to action in its first Chicagoland competititon this season, hosting IUPUI in a noon CT doubleheader Saturday, March 14, at the Ballpark at Rosemont in Rosemont, Ill.
