LAFAYETTE, La. -- Northwestern concluded its third tournament in a three-week stretch Tuesday with a 14th place finish at the Louisiana Classics hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette at Oakbourne Country Club.
The Wildcats had a tough time getting untracked in Tuesday's final round, making just three birdies as a team on their first nine and seven overall on the day. The team's 16-over 304 left them in 14th-place among the 14-team field at 31-over 895 (294-297-304).
The tournament ended a three-tournament stretch in three-straight weeks that largely was successful for Northwestern up until the Classics. NU began the spring season with a 3-1 record at the Big Ten Match Play Championship before capturing third place at Pepperdine's Jones Invitational last week.
Northwestern now has three weeks off before returning to action March 27-29 at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford.
Freshman Charles Wang (Beijing, China/Sarasota Christian School) led Northwestern Tuesday with a 2-over 74. With NU teeing off the back nine, he made the turn at 3-over 39 before a three-birdie front side got him back to 2-over on the day. He placed 50th overall at 9-over 225 (74-77-74).
Junior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) had NU's top finish of the tournament with a 37th place effort, though it came after a rough last four holes led to a final round 4-over 76. Jamieson was even par entering the 381-yard par-4 sixth, and went bogey-par-bogey before a double bogey at the par-3 ninth left him at 7-over 223 (71-76-76).
Senior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) had the steadiest final round for the Wildcats, but was unable to card a single birdie on the day. His 15-par, three-bogey round was good for a 3-over 75 and a 54-hole total of 11-over 227 (75-77-75).
Freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) also did not find a birdie on the course Tuesday en route to a 7-over 79. He fell 19 spots in the standings to a 54th-place 10-over 226 (74-73-79).
Freshman Sam Triplett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) was leading Northwestern through nine holes of play in the final round, making an early bogey at No. 13 before getting back to even par with a birdie at the 168-yard par-3 17th. He turned at even par, then stumbled to an 8-over 44 coming home to end up at 8-over on the day and 12-over 228 (77-71-80) for the tournament, placing him 61st.
