Evanston, Ill -- Corinne Wessels of the Northwestern Lacrosse program has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
After missing the first four games of the season due to injury, Wessels shined in her collegiate debut at No. 2 North Carolina. She was one of five freshmen to get the starting nod from head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller and did not disappoint.
The Manassas, Va., native recorded four points in the contest, scoring a pair of goals and dishing out a pair of assists. She scored her first career goal in the first half before dishing out a pair of assists and notching another goal in the second half. Her second goal came in highlight-reel fashion as she she went behind the back to tie the game, 10-10.
Wessels was the No. 17 ranked freshman according to Lacrosse Magazine after earning Under Armoud All-American honors as a freshman and being named the regional player of the year four times. She ranks first in the National Federation of State High School Associations history in career assists (327), assists in a season (142), career points (765) and points in a season (256). She adds a dynamic scoring threat to the Wildcats as she also ranks third in NFSHSA history with 438 career goals.
The Wildcats will be back in action this Saturday when they open play at Lakeside Field against Colorado. Opening draw is scheduled for noon and the game will be streamed on NUSports.com.
