SAN ANTONIO -- Two multi-run innings sank Northwestern Friday night as the Wildcats fell to Incarnate Word at Nelson W. Wolff Stadium, 8-1.

A few hours after dropping a tight one-run ballgame against Villanova in the Irish Alamo Invitational opener, the Wildcats were back in action against the Incarnate Word Cardinals. NU went down in order in the top of the first inning and UIW struck right away for a run against starter Reed Mason. Austin Hoffman drove in the first run of the day on a fielder's choice, but Mason limited the damage to just one run.

The second inning was scoreless before UIW erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third. Ethan McGill delivered the biggest blow, driving in a pair of runs with a double down the left-field line. After three innings, the Cardinals led the Wildcats 5-0.

Incarnate Word posted two more runs in the in the fourth and a single tally in the bottom of the sixth to take a comfortable 8-0 lead. Later, Northwestern was able to get a run across in the top of the eighth. Reid Hunter notched a two-out single to right field before Joe Hoscheit scorched a double down the line in right field. Zach Jones walked to load the bases before RJ Watters delivered an RBI single that scored Hunter.

Mason surrendered seven runs over five innings on the bump while fanning six. Justin Yoss made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen by throwing three innings in relief. The Texan allowed a run on five hits while striking out three.

Hunter, Jones and JR Reimer all picked up two hits for Northwestern Friday night. Hunter leads the 'Cats with seven hits in five games this season. He's batting .368 with a team-high two RBI.

The Wildcats continue the Irish Alamo Invitational Saturday when they battle the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 1 p.m. Junior Matt Portland will toe the rubber for NU. In his first start this season against Michigan State, the lefty allowed only two hits in six innings of work.
