EVANSTON, Ill. -- February has been a memorable month for Northwestern sophomore Nia Coffey to say the least. The Minneapolis, Minn., native recorded a double-double in road wins at Purdue and Michigan, while adding the game-winning layup with 4.9 seconds left against the Wolverines on Valentine's Day. for her outstanding effort, Coffey was named to the Big ten Weekly Honor Roll for the third consecutive week, the conference announced Monday.
Coffey averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds in the last two games to earn the Big Ten recognition for the third week in a row.
The past week began for Coffey and the Wildcats on Feb. 11 with a contest at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind., against the Purdue Boilermakers. The 'Cats fell behind by as many as 14 points in the first half before storming back to win the game in overtime, 73-65. Coffey played a critical role, scoring 17 points and adding 11 rebounds, two assists and a steal in 36 minutes. She also converted all five of her attempts from the free-throw line, helping the Wildcats to a 94.4-percent mark from the charity stripe.
The victory on Wednesday was Northwestern's first against Purdue at Mackey Arena since Dec. 29, 1996.
Northwestern ventured to Ann Arbor, Mich., to close the week against Michigan in a game that was televised by the Big Ten Network on Feb. 14. With the bright lights shining down, Coffey rose to the challenge and scored a game-high 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds, three blocks, three steals and an assist. The forward was at her best during the game's closing seconds. With her team down by a point, Coffey corralled a rebound off a missed free-throw attempt with 10.4 seconds to go. Without a timeout, she calmly took the ball the length of the floor and scored with a soft left-handed layup to put the Wildcats ahead, 63-62 with 4.9 seconds left. Despite never leading the Wolverines until Coffey's shot went through, Northwestern hung on for its fifth consecutive win.
Coffey is averaging 19.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game over the past six games, in which Northwestern has posted a record of 5-1.
After playing three of the last four games on the road, Northwestern returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 18 to host the No. 21/20 Nebraska Huskers at 7 p.m. The Wildcats won the last meeting between the two sides in Evanston, 63-59, on Jan. 26, 2014.
