EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern returns to the site of its most impressive win a year ago when it travels to Madison to face No. 5/4 Wisconsin at Kohl Center. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
The Wildcats defeated the Badgers -- who went on to reach the Final Four -- 65-56 on Jan. 29 last season for the team's first victory at Kohl Center and their first in Madison since an 82-71 victory at UW Fieldhouse on Feb. 21, 1996. Here are a few other notable items from last year's victory:
NU limited the Badgers to 26.3 percent shooting in the contest and held the hosts without a field goal over a span of 12:15 in the second half. The field goal percentage was Wisconsin's second-lowest ever at home under Bo Ryan.
To date, the victory for Northwestern is one of only five for unranked Big Ten teams in 79 games at the Kohl Center against a Ryan-coached Wisconsin squad.
The 36-point turnaround between a 27-point loss to the Badgers in the first meeting and the nine-point win marked the fifth-best turnaround for NU between losing the first matchup of the season and winning the second in school history.
Drew Crawford became the first opposing Big Ten player to score 30 points at the Kohl Center since Shannon Brown scored 31 for Michigan State on Jan. 8, 2006.
The Wildcats are coming off a 76-60 loss at Nebraska on Tuesday. Northwestern led 41-40 with 15 minutes remaining but a 17-point run by the Cornhuskers allowed the hosts to pull away. Alex Olah led the 'Cats with 16 points while freshmen Scottie Lindsey and Vic Law added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Northwestern has been extremely competitive during its current skid. Prior to Tuesday's loss at Nebraska, each of the Wildcats' previous six defeats were by single digits with the average margin of defeat being 4.2 points. Five straight contests from Jan. 11-25 were a one-possession game with less than two seconds remaining in regulation.
Northwestern dropped the first meeting between the teams this season 81-58 Jan. 4 in Evanston. Tre Demps led the Wildcats with 17 points.
Scouting Wisconsin
The Badgers posted a 92-78 home win over Indiana on Tuesday as Wisconsin shot 60.4 percent from the field. Frank Kaminsky led the hosts with a game-high 23 points as all five Badgers starters scored in double figures.
Kaminsky paces the Badgers with averages of 17.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while shooting 54.7 percent from the field. Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes contribute 12.7 and 12.6 points per game, respectively. Wisconsin leads the Big Ten in scoring defense, surrendering an average of 56.5 points per game to its opponents.
Bo Ryan has a 341-123 record in 14 seasons as the head coach at Wisconsin and a 724-226 career mark as a head coach.
