EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sophomore Nia Coffey has been named to the Big Ten women's basketball weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday. It is the second time this season that she has been recognized for her on-court performance.
Coffey averaged 23.5 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and 1.5 steals in games against Iowa and Minnesota. She shot a combined 47.2 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from 3-point range against the Hawkeyes and Golden Gophers.
The second-year forward had the best offensive output of her career against Iowa on January 29. Coffey poured in a career-high 35 points in 29 minutes during a game in which the No. 20/17 Hawkeyes barely won, 102-99. She sank a career-high four 3-pointers that night (on five attempts), helping account for an NCAA record of 32 that were made between the two teams in the game.
A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Coffey turned in another top effort against her hometown team as the Wildcats beat Minnesota, 70-49, on Feb. 1. She scored 12 points and ripped down 12 rebounds to register her team-high eighth double-double of the season. Coffey added three blocks, all of which came in the first half against the Gophers.
Coffey was previously named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Dec. 1, 2014 after helping the Wildcats take down No. 18/18 DePaul in Lincoln Park.
Michigan State's Tori Jankoska and Minnesota's Amanda Zahui B. share Big Ten Player of the Week honors. Joining Coffey on the honor roll this week is Ally Disterhoft of Iowa and Lexie Brown of Maryland.
Northwestern will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 5 when it visits Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. to play the Indiana Hoosiers at 6 p.m. CST. The last time that the two teams met was on March 27, 2014 in the third round of the 2014 WNIT. The Wildcats return to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, Feb. 8 to host Illinois and celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day. For more information about that game, please click here.
