EVANSTON, Ill.
-- Northwestern will proudly host its fourth-annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration event prior to the women's basketball game against Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 8. The pre-game event begins at 11:30 a.m. with the game between the Wildcats and Illini schedule to tip at 1 p.m.

This special event is open to girls in grades 4-12 grades and it provides the unique opportunity to interact with Northwestern student-athletes, staff, coaches and other professionals in a roundtable setting.

Following the roundtables, participants will here from Jorie Sax, the keynote speaker. Sax is the Vice President of the Chicago Chapter of Women in Sports and Events and a member of the legal team at MillerCoors, where she guides the competitive digital and social media vision for the company. Previously, Sax spent nine seasons with the Chicago White Sox organization where she was one of the youngest employees to hold a senior-level position.

After the keynote address, participants will be able to discuss various topics relative to women playing in sports and working in athletics with NU representatives. In addition to Sax, CBS Chicago sports anchor and four-time Big Ten women's tennis champion Megan Mawicke will be in attendance, along with NU Assistant Athletic Director for Career Enhancement & Employer Relations Julie Dunn Hammer. Northwestern cross country coaches April Likhite and Audrey Huth will be on hand, as will assistant women's soccer coach Shannon Neely. Several current student-athletes will be at tables, as well.

NGWSD at Northwestern, which takes place at the N Club located inside Welsh-Ryan Arena, begins with check-in at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8 and the roundtable discussions will start at 11:30 a.m. The event will wrap up just in time for Northwestern's 1 p.m. tip vs. Illinois.

While NGWSD started in 1987 as a single event in our nation's capital to honor Olympic volleyball star Flo Hyman, the day has since grown into a nationwide commemoration spanning all 50 states. Now in its 29th year, NGWSD is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of four premiere girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States: Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, and the Women's Sports Foundation.

Tickets for the event are just $3 for participants and family members and that price covers the event, as well as a ticket to the women's basketball game. Tickets can be picked up on the day of the event, but pre-registration is required.
