GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) led Northwestern's 11-man contingent at the four-day U.S. Winter National Championships that wrapped up Saturday, scoring points in a pair of individual events.
NU also scored points with top-16 finishes in the 4x100 medley, 4x50 freestyle and 4x100 freestyle relays to give the Wildcats a 16th-place team finish at the national meet that annually attracts elite swimmers from across the college landscape as well as professional entries.
Wilimovsky's best performance came in his signature event, the 1,650 free, during which he swam an NCAA `B' cut of 14:51.10 to place fifth in the nation and first among all college swimmers at the meet. Wilimovsky, a U.S. National teamer in open water and the 1,500-meter freestyle, placed behind two former Michigan milers and a pair of current teenage über distancers.
Wilimovsky also had a 13th-place finish in the 500 free with another NCAA `B' time of 4:22.02.
Freshman Almog Olshtein (Haifa, Israel/Haifa) garnered NU's lone other NCAA `B' effort of the meet when he led off the 4x50 free relay with a 20.10 50 free split, easily his best time of the year at that distance.
NU's breaststrokers all recorded season-best times in each of their two events, led by Uula Auren's (Helsinki, Finland/Mäkelänrinteen Lukio) 55.70 in the 100 breast and Van Donkersgoed's (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) 2:03.27 in the 200 breast. Senior Aaron Sears (Neenah, Minn./Neenah) had season-best times in both events, as well.
Two young Johnathans, sophomore Jonathan Lieberman (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and freshman Jonathan Blansfield (Westport, Conn./Staples) each enjoyed good meets. Lieberman swam season-best times in both of his events while Blansfield chopped a healthy chunk of time off his season-best in the mile on Saturday afternoon.
One other freshman, Nick Petersen (Thiensville, Wis./Homestead), also had season-best swims at the meet. Petersen's came in both sprint freestyle races.
NU's 4x50 free relay team of Olshtein, Andy Jovanovic (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy), Grant Halsall (Laxey, Isle of Man, GBR) and Auren swam a season-best time in that event.
