Northwestern 21, Stanford 13 -- Match Play-by-Play
STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 16 Northwestern claimed victories in six of 10 bouts to earn a 21-13 dual meet win over Stanford Saturday in its first official competition of 2014-15. The win was Northwestern's sixth in seven meetings with the Cardinal since 2008.
The dual match started at 165 pounds, a strength of the Wildcats with senior and returning All-American Pierce Harger getting the season started with an 8-4 victory over Stanford's 16th-ranked Jim Wilson.
The Cardinal went ahead 6-3 in the team score on back-to-back decisions by Keaton Subjeck and Garet Krohn, but senior 197-pounder Alex Polizzi ran away with a technical fall (18-0) against Ryan Davies to quickly restore an 8-6 Northwestern lead. Mike McMullan, the nation's No. 1-ranked heavyweight, then was tested by Nathan Butler but ultimately prevailed, 3-1, on the strength of a first-period takedown and a rapid escape to begin the second period.
Stanford's second ranked wrestler, No. 15 Evan Silver, managed to secure bonus points with a major decision at 125 over Garrison White, and Stanford regained the lead at 13-11 thanks to a sudden-victory win at 133 by Connor Schram.
But that proved to be all the points the hosts would earn on the evening thanks to three straight Northwestern wins to close the evening. Senior Jameson Oster picked up an 11-6 win at 141 to set up defending NCAA champion Jason Tsirtsis' dominating 17-8 major decision over Garrett Schaner.
True freshman Bryce Brill then was victorious in his collegiate debut, earning a first-period takedown and ultimately earning a 6-0 decision with more than 2 minutes 30 seconds of riding time to his credit.
Next week, the Wildcats head to Ypsilanti to compete in the Eastern Michigan Duals, facing EMU, Clarion and Central Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 15.
