Skip Myslenski on Lumpkin's Transformation
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern plays it first of two home games affiliated with the Cancun Challenge as it hosts North Florida at 7 p.m. Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats also host Elon on Saturday before taking off on Sunday for contests in Mexico on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Northwestern posted a win in its first road game of the season on Monday, defeating Brown 69-56. JerShon Cobb scored a game-high 16 points while Sanjay Lumpkin posted a double-double with a career-high 15 points while tying another career best with 12 rebounds. The Wildcats held the Bears to 36.4 percent shooting from the field while finishing with a 39-25 rebounding edge.
Lumpkin's double-double was Northwestern's second of the young season after Alex Olah recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds in a season-opening victory over Houston Baptist.
The Wildcats have been aggressive on the offensive glass in the early stages of the season. Northwestern's average of 13.0 offensive boards per game leads the Big Ten through two contests.
Northwestern holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with North Florida with both contests being played in Evanston. The Wildcats won the previous meeting 84-54 Dec. 16, 2009. Michael Thompson led six NU players in double figures with 14 points.
Northwestern is 3-0 all-time against members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The only other team from the league that the Wildcats have faced is Jacksonville (W, 67-59; 12/14/99).
Scouting North Florida
The Ospreys have been tabbed to finish second in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season behind Florida Gulf Coast. Dallas Moore, Beau Beech and Chris Davenport were all picked to the league's 10-member preseason all-conference team.
After dropping its season-opener at South Carolina, North Florida bounced back to defeat Webber International 79-55 on Monday. Moore, the A-Sun Freshman of the Year last season, scored a game-high 22 points for the Ospreys.
Matthew Driscoll is in his sixth season as the head coach at North Florida where he has a 74-88 record.
