NU Director of Golf and Player Development Pat Goss (left) and Head Coach David Inglis have added two excellent students and golfers to their program.
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach David Inglis announced today the signing of two future Wildcats to National Letters of Intent. The duo of Pete Griffith (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) and Ryan Lumsden (London, England/Wellington College) will matriculate to Evanston and begin competition for NU in the fall of 2015.
For this class, Inglis and NU Director of Golf and Player Development Pat Goss found superior talent in familiar places. Griffith hails from Southern California, as have several current and recent Wildcats including 2011 graduate and 2014 European Tour winner David Lipsky. Lumsden, a Scotland native, shares a home country with current NU junior Josh Jamieson and Inglis himself.
"I am very excited to have Pete and Ryan join our program," Goss said. "Coach Inglis did a great job of identifying two players who are excellent students and young men with a strong belief in Northwestern University and our men's golf program. They each have a great enthusiasm for Northwestern and will make a strong impact on our team. I could not be more thrilled for their arrivals on campus next September."
Griffith is an AJGA winner after capturing the 2013 Junior at River Ridge in a dramatic playoff victory. At the time of his commitment, Griffith was ranked 77th overall and in the top-30 in his recruiting class by the Polo Golf Rankings. The youngest-ever winner of the LACC Fowler Cup, Griffith also has had success in competitive CIF prep play, finishing third in the individual finals as a junior.
"Coach Goss and I were excited to get an early commitment from Pete late last year," Inglis said. "He impressed me a lot with his win in the AJGA event as a sophomore and when he shot 66-67 in the final two rounds to win the Fowler Cup at Los Angeles Country Club, site of the 2023 US Open. His ability to go low will be a big asset to the team."
Lumsden had success this summer, finishing 18th during stroke play at the 2014 British Boys before advancing to the round of 32 in match play. He also won the silver medal at the 2014 Scottish Boys Championship and twice this year was selected to represent his home country, first at the Henry Cooper Jr. Masters and again at the Boys Home International. He attends London's Wellington College, which he led to a win at the ISGA Schools Cup in October with a runner-up performance.
"Ryan is a great addition to the team and is someone who has already shown a tremendous ability to improve over the last year, something that will work very well in our developmental environment at Northwestern," Inglis said. "He had a great summer in 2014, finishing runner-up in the Scottish Boys Championship, representing Scotland at the Home Internationals, and a strong showing at the British Boys Championship. All of this international experience will help him make an immediate impact on the team."
