EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern travels to San Martin, Calif., this Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 3-5, for the 10th annual Gifford Collegiate Championship hosted by UCLA at CordeValle Country Club.
The tournament will feature 18 holes of play on each of its three days. Play starts with tee times off the front and back at 8:30 a.m. PT/10:30 a.m. CT Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday's final round moving back to 9 a.m. PT/11 a.m. CT as a shotgun start. The tournament is a depth-testing six-count-five format, meaning six players comprise each team's roster with the best five scores counting in each round. Most collegiate tournaments are of the five-count-four variety.
The Gifford's field is small at just 10 teams but is loaded with quality, featuring No. 4 Texas, No. 8 UCLA (host), No. 16 Stanford, No. 18 USC, No. 22 South Florida, No. 34 SMU, No. 38 Colorado and No. 66 Northwestern all inside the top-70 in the current Golfstat.com rankings. Wisconsin (105th) and Lamar (113th) round out the field.
The tournament is an annual stop on Northwestern's season schedule and returns to CordeValle -- its home for eight seasons -- after a one-year hiatus. Last year's event was staged at Pelican Hill; the two courses now alternate hosting duties each year.
All seven of NU's active golfers this season will compete in the Gifford with Dylan Wu, Josh Jamieson, Bennett Lavin, Matthew Negri, Charles Wang and Scott Smith comprising the team lineup. Freshman Sam Triplett will play as an individual.
