ERIN, Wis. -- Northwestern officially entered the Wu-Wang era Tuesday in the final round of the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, getting a combined 5-under par effort from the two freshmen to help the Wildcats card their best round of the tournament by 10 strokes and finish fourth among the 11-team field.

"Impressed by both," Northwestern Director of Golf and Player Development Pat Goss said.

As a team, Northwestern turned in a 4-under 284 in the third round after getting the fourth counting score it had been searching for in the earlier rounds of the Erin Hills Intercollegiate. The Wildcats ended up at 16-over 880 (302-294-284) for the tournament, two shots in front of fifth-place South Florida and two shots behind third-place and host Marquette.

Freshman Charles Wang (Beijing, China/Sarasota Christian School), who endured hellacious starts to his first two rounds of this tournament, came out on fire Tuesday with a birdie-birdie beginning. He nearly made it three in a row with a narrow miss of a 10-foot birdie effort on the third. Though he would give a shot back at No. 5, Wang birdied No. 8 to turn in 2-under 34.

"One thing I love about Charles is he is not afraid to shoot low scores," tweeted Goss.

On Tuesday, he certainly was not. Wang made bogey at No. 10, then carded birdies at Nos. 13 and 15 on the way home for a 3-under 69. Wang began his tournament with an 86 in the first round Sunday and incredibly came all the way back for a 69 in his final round, leading to a 54-hole total of 15-over 231 (86-76-69) that put him 46th in the field.

Freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) immediately recovered from an early bogey at No. 4 to birdie No. 5, then pulled into red numbers with a birdie at the 574-yard par-5 seventh, turning in 1-under 35.

"Dylan Wu is fun to watch play golf," tweeted Goss early in Wednesday's round. "No practice swings, very good driver of the ball and picks up his tee fast."

On the back nine, Wu made seven-straight pars prior to a birdie at No. 17 that gave him a 2-under 70 for the day and lifted him to his first-collegiate top-10 finish, a seventh-place 2-over 218 (75-73-70).

After an opening birdie Tuesday, Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) flew the green at No. 2 and saw his chip settle back at his own feet for a double bogey. He bounced back immediately with a fist-pump inducing birdie at No. 3 to get back to even par. Later in the round, Jamieson was 2-over par through 13 holes and got back once again to even with birdies at Nos. 14 and 17 for an even-par 72. Jamieson finished sixth to lead NU in the 54-hole standings at 1-over 217 (72-73-72).

Senior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) found himself 3-over through 12 holes after a double bogey at No. 11 and a bogey at No. 12. He fought back with birdies at Nos. 14 and 16 to get back to 1-over 73 on the day and 3-over 219 (74-72-73) for the tournament, good for 12th place. That finish matches his career-best as a Wildcat.

Freshman Sam Triplett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) shot his third-straight 9-over 81 of the tournament to close the event in 63rd place at 27-over 243 (81-81-81).

Northwestern returns to action nearly immediately this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12, as the defending champions at the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, N.C.
