TULSA, Okla. -- Logan Staggs, the men's tennis team's only freshman, has had quite the debut to his collegiate career as a Wildcat. Staggs captured his sixth straight win of the ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday to advance into the third round of the qualifying draw and keep NU alive in the tournament.
The freshman won four matches in the prequalifying draw over the weekend before playing the first round of qualifying on Monday. In the second round today, he defeated Dylan McCloskey of the University of Tulsa 6-1, 6-2 to secure his third round spot.
Sophomore Sam Shropshire also played in the second round, but fell 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Oregon's Kevin Farin.
In the first round of doubles, Staggs and junior Mihir Kumar played a close, even match against Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman of UTSA, but the opposing duo ultimately prevailed 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3). Shropshire and junior Fedor Baev went toe to toe with Francisco Dias and Julius Tverijonas from George Washington, but fell 7-6 (3), 6-4.
