EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern student-athletes all assembled together at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sept. 22 for the 2014-15 kickoff event of the Robert E. and Emily H. King NU P.R.I.D.E Program.

The gathering started when the Co-Presidents of NU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C) Scott Smith (men's golf) and Nandi Mehta (women's soccer) introduced Northwestern Vice President of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. Jim Phillips. Though Phillips was unable to be in attendance personally, he joined the meeting via Skype on Welsh-Ryan Arena's brand new video boards. Phillips welcomed the group back to campus and thanked the 'Cats for all of their hard work in the classroom, in the community and in competition.

Kristin Kane Herbison, the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services, then introduced a motivational speaker to the group. A former football student-athlete at the United States Naval Academy, Mr. Clint Bruce, lettered for four years and captained the 1996 team that captured the Aloha Bowl championship. In 1997, Bruce joined the elite Navy SEAL community, where he held various positions of command and leadership.

Bruce inspired the Wildcats to strive to be elite in everything they do and reminded the group that, "Excellence is where the adventure begins."

Following the address from Bruce, the meeting concluded with a delicious BBQ dinner in the lobby of Welsh-Ryan Arena.
