ORLANDO, Fla. -- On a difficult day for scoring Monday at the Annika Intercollegiate, Northwestern posted the second-best team total of the second round at the Reunion Resort Watson Course to remain in third place among the elite 12-team field, within striking distance of the top of the leaderboard.

The Wildcats carded a 1-over 289 in the round to give themselves a 36-hole total of 1-under 575 (286-289), just three strokes behind tournament leaders South Carolina and two shots in back of second-place Arizona. NU has a three shot cushion on fourth-place USC.

Defending national champion Duke was the lone team to break par in the second round with a 2-under 286, allowing the Blue Devils to jump up into a three-way tie for fifth place with Oklahoma State and Stanford at 3-over par. The Wildcats began Monday tied with the Cardinal.

To revisit field strength at the inaugural Annika Invitational, 10 of the field's 12 teams advanced to the NCAA Championships last year with all 10 finishing among the top-18 in the country. Duke (1), USC (2), UCLA (3) and Arizona State (5) all earned top-5 results in the NCAA a year ago. Northwestern placed 15th nationally for the second-straight year.

On a tough day for scoring for all, junior Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International School) carded her second-straight 1-under 71 at the Annika Intercollegiate to climb seven spots on the leaderboard into a massive seven-way tie for fourth place at 2-under 142 (71-71). The day did not begin with that result on the horizon after Tangkamolprasert suffered three bogeys in a row from Nos. 4 through 6. Sitting at 3-over par, she played her final 10 holes in four under to also keep the 'Cats within striking distance in the team race.

Junior Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) made five birdies on Sunday and she followed that up with four more in Monday's second round to join Tangkamolprasert in the glut of fourth-place players at 2-under par. Park turned Monday in 1-under 35 but suffered two quick bogeys on the back nine to find herself 1-over par. She immediately responded with back-to-back birdies at the 358-yard par-4 13th and the 480-yard par-5 14th to get back to red figures. A bogey at the last put her back at even par for the day and 2-under 142 (70-72) for the tournament.

Sophomore Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) made nine straight pars on the front side before making the turn and immediately carding a bogey at No. 10. She rebounded with a birdie at No. 14, then got to red numbers with a second birdie at No. 16. Back-to-back finishing bogeys, however, gave her a 1-over 73 for the round and a two-day total of 3-over 147 (74-73), placing her 31st overall.

Freshman Hannah Kim (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) had a strong day on the course save for her final hole. An even-par front nine featured a birdie at the short 130-yard par-3 3rd, and she was 1-under through 17 holes after a second birdie at No. 14, but a double bogey at the last for the second day in a row led to a 1-over 73 in the second round and a 36-hole total of 4-over 148 (75-73) to put her 34th in the field.

Senior Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) was one of three Wildcats under par in Sunday's first round but she struggled on Monday, carding a 6-over 78. Lee now is in 40th place overall at 5-over 149 (71-78).

The third and final round of the Annika Intercollegiate begins with 8 a.m. ET/7 a.m. CT tee times tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 30.
