EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern student-athletes earned 65 Academic All-Big Ten honors in six spring and two at-large sports, the Big Ten Conference office announced today (May 28). Coupled with 104 accolades won in the fall and 51 more in the winter, a school-record total of 220 Wildcats were named Academic All-Big Ten during 2013-14 to mark the fourth-straight year with over 200 awards for NU student-athletes.
To put more perspective on this outstanding accomplishment, the 220 Academic All-Big Ten awards represents 64 percent of Northwestern student-athletes eligible to receive the honor. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution. From that pool, those who carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher receive the award.
Northwestern-sponsored sports honored by the Big Ten and recognized during the spring season are: baseball, men's golf, women's golf, softball, men's tennis and women's tennis. In addition, the Wildcats' women's fencing (which competes in the Midwest Conference) and women's lacrosse (which competes in the American Lacrosse Conference) squads also were honored.
Instituted beginning in 2008-09, the conference office also will hand out the Distinguished Scholar Award over the summer. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letter winners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The 3.7 GPA benchmark was designed to include the top 10 percent of all eligible student-athletes.
The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference's Academic All-Big Ten program. The recipients will be honored prior to the fall of 2014 based on their GPAs from the 2013-14 academic year.
