EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern puts a bow on both its 2014 nonconference and home schedules as it hosts the SIU Edwardsville Cougars in a three-game series at Rocky Miller Park beginning Friday, May 9 at 3 p.m.
SAYONARA SENIORS
Northwestern will celebrate its seven-member senior class this weekend, culminating with a postgame ceremony following the series finale against SIUE on Sunday, May 11. The group, which began playing together in 2011, has been part of 75 victories entering play this weekend. The seven senior Wildcats are: RHP Ethan Bramschreiber (Glendora, Calif./St. Francis), RHP Nick Friar (Westport, Mass./Westport), 3B Nick Linne (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), RHP/DH Jack Livingston (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Northern), RHP Jack Quigley (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm), C Jake Straub (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and LHP Dan Tyson (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic).
FANTASTIC MR. FRIAR
Senior Nick Friar is tied for the team lead with 20 appearances, including four starts, all since April 16. In his last seven appearances (since 4/16), the right-hander is 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 25.0 IP. Friar threw a career-high 7.0 IP in his first career Big Ten start against Michigan on May 2. Late last month, the Westport, Mass., native struck out a career-high eight against Wheaton College on April 22.
TERRIFIC MR. TYSON
Northwestern senior Dan Tyson was dominant during his last outing on the mound, May 6 vs. Chicago. The left-handed pitcher matched a career high by throwing 8.1 innings on the hill while striking out a career-high seven. Tyson leads NU's staff with a 3.52 ERA and he is tied for the team lead with four victories, which marks a career high. In his last two starts, Tyson has a 1.28 ERA over 14.1 innings of work.
HEELAN'S HOT BAT
Second baseman Scott Heelan has been swinging a hot bat since moving from behind the plate. Since April 5, Heelan is batting .413 (33-for-80) with a team-high 12 RBI and six doubles in 21 games. Heelan has hit safely in 19 of the 21 games and is batting .315 overall this season, which ranks second on the team. The redshirt junior is batting .329 with four doubles and nine RBI in Big Ten games for Northwestern.
KEEPING IT CLOSE
Northwestern has played in 15 one-run games this season, including six of its last 10. The Wildcats are 6-9 in games decided by a run in 2014 following Tuesday's 2-1 win over Chicago. Southern Illinois has played more one-run games than anyone in the country this year with 23 (10-13), while Illinois leads the Big Ten with 17 (11-6).
SERIES HISTORY
This weekend marks the first-ever meeting on the diamond between Northwestern and SIU Edwardsville. The Wildcats are 1-4 this season against teams that they have not faced prior to 2014.
