EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's season will continue in the NCAA postseason this year after earning the No. 10 seed at the May 15-17 San Antonio Regional at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
The Wildcats have qualified for NCAA Regionals for the 15th time in head coach Pat Goss' 18-year tenure. NU has advanced out of Regional play seven times under Goss, most recently in 2011 when an epic final round charge at the Colorado Regional propelled NU into the top three and a berth at the NCAA National Championships, where the Wildcats would finish 22nd in the country. That year the Wildcats also were the No. 10 Regional seed.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 15-17. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three Regionals (including Northwestern's) while the other three will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each Regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The 13 teams at the San Antonio Regional are: No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Central Florida, No. 18 UCLA, No. 19 Vanderbilt, No. 30 South Florida, No. 31 SMU, No. 42 Georgia Southern, No. 44 Georgia State, No. 55 TCU, No. 50 Northwestern, No. 74 College of Charleston, No. 76 VCU and No. 199 Columbia. Teams are listed in the order they are seeded for the Regional; rankings are from Golfstat.com.
Northwestern won a pair of events during the 2013-14 season, beginning with its own Windon Memorial Classic in September and then again at Duke's Rod Myers Invitational in October. The Wildcats enter this week's San Antonio Regional ranked No. 55 in the most recent Golfstat.com data.
Northwestern is coming off a fourth-place performance at the Big Ten Championships that featured solid play atop the lineup and strong individual rounds from each member of the team, but those rounds did not always coincide for low team scoring--the lone factor in keeping NU away from the top of the leaderboard.
Senior Jack Perry, ranked among the nation's top individuals by Golfstat, was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team after a T3 effort two weeks ago. He has six top-10 finishes for NU this season.
Sophomore Andrew Whalen also challenged for the individual lead early at the B1G event while junior Matthew Negri closed with a 3-under 69, tied for the best score of any individual in the field for the entire week.
