EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fifty-one Northwestern student-athletes across five winter sports garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors in the 2013-14 season, the Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday. Coupled with NU's record-breaking performance of 104 fall sports student-athletes announced in December, the 155 Wildcats who have earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades thus far in 2013-14 represent a new all-time high for Northwestern.
Northwestern's five eligible sports for the winter season are men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and wrestling. NU's fencing program, which recently secured its 15th straight top-10 national finish at the NCAA championships, will be recognized during the spring at-large period.
Among those individuals who excelled in their athletic pursuits while maintaining a high standard in the classroom were All-Big Ten performers on the basketball court Drew Crawford and Maggie Lyon. Wrestling's Pierce Harger last week became an All-American on the mat, while sophomore Jordan Wilimovsky of men's swimming stands ready to compete as one of the favorites in the mile at the upcoming NCAA Championships. On the women's side, diver Cosima Lenz earned Academic All-Big Ten honors after landing a spot on the podium at the Big Ten Championships.
Earning Academic All-Big Ten recognition requires a student-athlete to be in his/her second year at the institution, letter in his/her sport and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
Instituted beginning in 2008-09, the conference office also will hand out the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letter winners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The 3.7 GPA benchmark was designed to include the top 10 percent of all eligible student-athletes.
The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference's Academic All-Big Ten program. The recipients will be honored prior to the fall of 2013 based on their GPAs from the 2012-13 academic year.
