Corning Named Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. - Wildcat Senior Veronica Corning has been awarded the Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week the conference announced Wednesday. Corning was recognized following her efforts during the ITA Kickoff matches last weekend.

Corning notched decisive wins against two top-60 opponents. On Saturday, in her team's match against No. 29 Oklahoma State, she defeated No. 59 Kanyapat Narattana 6-1, 6-1. In Sunday's match against No. 26 Arizona State, she took down No. 50 Stephanie Vlad 6-3, 6-2.

The senior also teamed up with Alicia Barnett in a 6-4 victory over Leighann Sahagun and Joanna Smith of Arizona State.

The weekly award is Corning's second of her career and the first since March 27, 2013. She joins teammate Lok Sze Leung, who was named Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Jan. 21 for her performance at the Wildcat Winter Duals.

No. 16 Northwestern advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. by beating both Oklahoma State and Arizona State. The championships will be held Feb. 7-10 at the Boar's Head Tennis Club and feature 16 of the best teams from around the country.

On Feb. 2, the Wildcats will host No. 15 Vanderbilt at the Combe Tennis Center. The Commodores also claimed a spot in the ITA National Team Indoors. The match will begin at 11 a.m.
