UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- No. 10 Northwestern held advantages in shots and penalty corners, but host and eighth-ranked Penn State made two first-half goals hold up in defeating the Wildcats 2-0 Saturday afternoon.
NU (10-3, 2-1 Big Ten) out-shot the Nittany Lions 10-9 and had eight corners, compared to five for PSU, but was never able to dent the scoreboard where it matters most.
The hosts got on the board first at 18:15 as they earned a penalty corner and then an ensuing penalty stroke and Brittany Grzywacz was able to convert for her seventh goal of the season, making it 1-0.
Penn State (8-3, 2-0) would add an insurance goal at 26:33 as Amanda Dinunzio scored unassisted for her first tally of the season.
Northwestern managed only two shots over the opening 35 minutes of play. The Wildcats did a good job of creating opportunities to get back into the game in the second half as they earned six corners, but the Nittany Lions prevented NU from closing the deficit.
Penn State goalkeeper Kylie Licata made four saves in the second half and five overall as Northwestern was shut out for the first time this season.
The 'Cats are right back in action Sunday as they travel to Kent State for an 11 a.m. Central time start.
