MAGALLONES MASTERS HOOSIERS
Sophomore Brandon Magallones was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Monday, May 13 following his masterful performance against No. 14 Indiana on May 11. The Manhattan, Ill., native held the top offense in the Big Ten to a lone run on two hits in a complete-game victory, his fifth win of the season. He struck out six and needed just 91 pitches to tame the Hoosiers. It is the second time in as many seasons that Magallones has won the weekly conference honor. On Tuesday, he was also named College Sports Madness National Pitcher of the Week.
IRON 'CAT
The name of fifth-year senior Trevor Stevens dots the Northwestern record book. On Sunday he became only the 12th player in program history to play 200 games. Stevens ranks third all-time in at-bats (776), seventh in stolen bases (51) and ninth in runs scored (138). The Glenview, Ill., native needs three hits in the final series of the season to reach 225 and crack the top 10 in that category as well.
WORKING OVERTIME
Northwestern is 5-2 in extra-inning affairs this season following its 5-3 victory at UIC on May 7. 2013 marks the first time the Wildcats have played seven extra-inning games since 1993 when they went 2-5 in extended ballgames. That year, however, three of the contests were only eight innings because they were scheduled as seven-inning games.
WHAT A RELIEF
Northwestern's bullpen has exhibited a propensity for the strikeout this season. Four Wildcats relievers, all juniors, are averaging at least nine strikeouts per 9.0 IP this season. Lefty Dan Tyson boasts the team's top ratio at 10.3 K/9, while right-hander Jack Livingston checks in at 10.1. Ethan Bramschreiber is averaging 9.8 K/9, just ahead of closer Kyle Ruchim at 9.7. As a staff, the 'Cats are averaging 7.3 strikeouts per game, which ranks as the best output in the conference.
SCOUTING THE SHOCKERS
Wichita State, currently tied with Illinois State atop the standings in the Missouri Valley Conference, enters the final weekend of the regular season with a strong .285 team batting average and a 3.49 team ERA. The high-powered offense has scored 305 runs in 56 games with three players having driven in at least 30 runs. Tyler Baker, a catcher and third baseman, leads the Shockers with 39 RBI and ranks second on the team in batting average (.328) and extra-base hits (17). WSU's pitching staff is strong on both the front and back ends. Thursday night's probable starter, Cale Elam, has five wins and a 2.33 ERA to go along with 61 strikeouts in 77.1 IP. A pair of relievers, Aaron LaBrie and Brandon Peterson have combined to make 44 apperarances and earn five wins and 12 saves. The duo has a combined ERA of 1.09 in 83 innings of work this season.
