T. Thornton -- Sports Illustrated College Athlete of the Year Nomination

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior standout Taylor Thornton has been named one of five female finalists for Sports Illustrated's College Athlete of the Year honor, the outlet announced Wednesday. After profiling each of five finalists on both the men's and women's sides, Sports Illustrated and SI.com will select one male and female winner who best embodies excellent achievement on the field and in the classroom, good sportsmanship and commitment to the community.

Thornton's decorated career at Northwestern includes national and conference player of the year honors as a junior in 2012, a National Defender of the Year award in 2011 and three IWLCA All-America laurels in her first three years with the Wildcats. The Dallas native, who has started all 87 games of her career, has scored 57 goals in 42 contests since the start of last season, including the game-winner in the 2012 NCAA Championship game victory over Syracuse.

The male and female winners of SI's College Athlete of the Year awards will be announced in the May 27 issue, which hits newsstands May 22.

Thornton and the Wildcats begin their national title defense this Sunday (May 12) when they host the winner of a first-round matchup between Notre Dame and Stanford at 1 p.m. CT in Evanston.
