2012 Chicago Red Stars Schedule • Red Stars Add Several Returnees to Roster
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern freshman midfielder Niki Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) has a busy summer ahead of her as she will suit up for the Chicago Red Stars of the WPSL Elite League. The team kicks off the season this Sunday, May 20 at 3 p.m. at Concordia University in River Forest, Ill., against FC Indiana.
This is Sebo's second season with the Red Stars after playing with the team during the 2011 campaign. At 19-years-old, she is one of the youngest players on the squad, which includes several current and past collegiate standouts.
The Red Stars will be foregoing one specific home venue for 2012, as field turf renovations will be ongoing this summer at Benedictine University, and instead will play at various locations in the Chicagoland area. One of those venues includes Sebo and Northwestern's home pitch, Lakeside Field. The Red Stars will host NE Mutiny at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 and the Philadelphia Fever at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, both at Lakeside Field.
Playing as a true freshman, Sebo saw significant playing time for Northwestern in 2011. She played in all 19 matches, starting 17 and scored a goal in NU's game against Wisconsin, helping the Wildcats come back to tie the Badgers, 1-1. Sebo logged 1,302 minutes as a freshman and had a span of four-straight games (9/25-10/8) where she played every single minute.
Former Northwestern defender Leigh Jakes was a teammate of Sebo's on last year's Red Stars squad.
The Chicago Red Stars have joined the new WPSL Elite League for the 2012 season. WPSL Elite is comprised of three former WPS clubs: the Red Stars, Boston Breakers and WNY Flash. Rounding out the 8-team league is ASA Chesapeake Charge, FC Indiana, New England Mutiny, New York Fury and Philadelphia Fever.
