FRENCH LICK, Ind. – Northwestern concluded the first round of the 2012 Big Ten Championships Friday at the Donald Ross Course in French Lick, Ind. The 'Cats sit in fifth place in the 12-team conference tournament, scoring a 19-over 307 in the first 18. NU is just two strokes behind fourth-place Michigan (305) and three behind third-place Illinois (304). NU trails the top two teams, Ohio State and Michigan State, by nine strokes as they are tied for first at 10-over 298.
 
Playing in her first Big Ten championship, freshman Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) leads the group of six NU competitors, shooting a 3-over 75 to tie for 11th. Lee started on hole No. 1 and had three birdies on the front nine at the first, eighth and ninth holes.
 
Lee was one of three NU golfers to have three birdies each in the round along with fellow freshman Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway) and sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic). Mai birdied holes five, 15 and 17 and is currently tied for 19th at 5-over 77. Junior Anne Ormson (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph's) has an identical score and placement to Mai, tying for 19th at 5-over 77.
 
Junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) finished the first round in the top-30 and is tied for 25th at 6-over 78. Brown is one stroke behind Weaver, shooting a 7-over 79 and is in a tie for 35th after the first 18.
 
Senior Alex Lederhausen rounded out the NU competitors and is tied for 53rd after a first-round score of 83.
 
The second round of the three-day tournament begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT.
