Northwestern's B1G Championships Notes Package ![]()
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern enters the 2012 Big Ten Championships as winners of three spring tournaments featuring one of the hottest golfers in the college game today--harbingers of big possibilities for the Wildcats.
The men's and women's B1G Championships moved off campus this season to the neutral site French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind., where the women will play on the historic Donald Ross course while the men will compete on the new and award-winning Pete Dye tract. The opening day, Friday, April 27, features a shotgun start and 36 holes of competition followed by tee times for the third and fourth rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com while head coach Pat Goss provides live updates and commentary from the course via twitter @NUGolf_Live.
Northwestern began its spring season by winning its third-consecutive Big Ten Match Play Championship before taking top team honors in stroke play events at the late February Rice Intercollegiate and the early April NYX Hoosier Invitational. Along the way, seniors Eric Chun and Sam Chien combined to win four Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors. Chun earned his for individual wins at Rice and the NYX while Chien's perfect 4-0 record at the Match Play event gave him the nod.
Speaking of Chun, the 2009 B1G champion put a real scare into current World No. 2 Luke Donald's school-record scoring average of 70.45 when his mark this year dipped to 70.25. Tougher courses to close out 2012 have it back at 70.70, but Chun has been atop the standings all year no matter how the courses scored. In nine stroke play starts, Chun has seven top-10 finishes, five top-2s and a pair of victories.
Junior Nick Losole has been a boost to the lineup since returning from a fall injury, earning the first two top-10 finishes of his career this spring. Sophomore Jack Perry also has recorded his first two top-10 collegiate efforts this spring, giving NU a hot lineup at the B1G Championships.
The Pete Dye course, which was named America's Best New Public Course in 2009 by Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine, was carefully carved on a dramatic hilltop offering a variety of elevation changes, rugged and dramatic terrain, narrow fairways and challenging bunkers.
The course plays an astonishing 8,102 yards with an 80.0 rating from the professional (Gold) tees.
NU AT THE B1G CHAMPIONSHIPS
Northwestern has won nine team or individual Big Ten Championships in the last 12 years, including senior Eric Chun's victory as a freshman in 2009. Chun was the first freshman to win the B1G since Illinois' Steve Stricker in 1986.
