GREENSBORO, N.C.– Northwestern wrapped up competition at the 2012 Bryan National Collegiate Sunday in Greensboro, N.C. The 'Cats shaved four strokes off their second round score, shooting a 301 in the third and final round to finish eighth at 32-over 896 (290-305-301). It was a tight race all the way from fourth-eighth place as just four strokes separated Ohio State and North Carolina (892), who tied for fourth, from NU.

Northwestern is ranked 44th in the latest Golfstat Women's Rankings and finished ahead of five teams with higher rankings including No. 33 Tulane (10th), No. 25 Virginia (11th), No. 24 Michigan State (12th), No. 38 Kentucky (13th) and No. 21 North Carolina State (14th). It was the first time this season NU placed ahead of Michigan State, which gives the 'Cats momentum as they prepare for the Big Ten Championships at the end of the month (April 27-29).

"There were a number of positive things to build on from this weekend," NU head coach Emily Fletcher said. "Our team is working really hard and we're looking forward to the next few weeks as we hope to end the regular season strong and carry that over to the Big Ten Championships."

Duke and Tennessee tied for first in the 17-team field at the Bryan National Collegiate with an 18-over 882 and went to a playoff on hole 18. To break the tie, all five golfers played the hole and the best four scores were taken. Tennessee made four pars to win the team title.

The NU duo of freshman Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway) and sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) mirrored each other throughout the tournament, finishing with the same score of 9-over 225 to lead the team in a tie for 25th. The two posted scores of 1-over 73 and 5-over 77 in the first and second rounds, respectively, and closed the weekend at 3-over 75.

Mai began the third round on the seventh hole. She bogeyed her first hole of the day, but rebounded with pars on eight, nine and 10 and then three-straight birdies from 11-13 and added one more birdie on 17. In total, Mai finished the tournament with eight birdies, tying for the ninth-most in the tournament, and 34 holes on par to score a 225, two strokes off her career low of 223.

Brown opened the third round with three-straight bogeys (started on hole eight) but rebounded nicely with birdies on holes 12 and 14 and was on par at holes 11, 13, 15 and 16. She added one more birdie on her second-to-last hole and closed out the final hole on par to help lead the 'Cats in the individual race.

Senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) had her best score of the weekend, and of the round for Northwestern, posting a 1-over 73. Lederhausen was consistent through the final 18, starting with seven pars and a birdie (hole 15). She bogeyed on holes 17 and two but closed the round with six-straight pars. She finished the tournament at 11-over 227, tying for 35th.

Freshman Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) had stayed on pace with Mai and Brown through the first two rounds, but shot a 6-over 78 Sunday. Lee tied with Mai for the most birdies in the round as she finished 1-under on the 1st, 2nd, 12th and 15th holes. Lee finished one stroke behind Lederhausen at 12-over 228 (73-77-78) to tie for 40th. She had an NU-best nine birdies, tying for the fifth-highest total of the tournament.

Junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) posted an identical second-round score, finishing at 8-over 80 in the final round. Weaver tied for 50th, shooting a 15-over 231 (71-80-80).

The final regular season test for Northwestern is next weekend when a number of Big Ten squads will face off at the Lady Buckeye in Columbus, Ohio. Competition runs Saturday, April 21-Sunday, April 22 and will provide a quality test for the 'Cats prior to the 2012 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind.
