EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan can add another accomplishment to the historical 2011 campaign as he was named the NSCAA/Mondo Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year Monday. Lenahan, along with the seven other regional honorees and the four NCAA semifinal head coaches, will be on the ballot for the NSCAA/Mondo National Coach of the Year award. This year's winner will be announced on Jan. 13, 2012 at the annual NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
The Great Lakes Region includes teams from the Big Ten, MAC, Horizon League and Big East.
This is the third NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year honor for Lenahan. In 2004, he guided the Wildcats to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance and a 15-6-2 overall record to win the award for the Great Lakes Region. He also earned Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year accolades while at Lafayette in 1998.
Lenahan was the unanimous choice for Big Ten Coach of the Year, leading the 2011 Northwestern squad to a 4-0-2 record in conference action and its first-ever Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. The 'Cats were unbeaten in 11-straight matches, the second-longest unbeaten streak in school history, and had five players named to the All-Big Ten teams, tying a school record. Lenahan also guided Northwestern to its sixth NCAA tournament appearance in school history, all of which have come during his tenure as head coach.
