EVANSTON, Ill. – After nearly a month away from competition, Northwestern hits the links this weekend at the 2011 Landfall Tradition on the Jack Nicklaus Course in Wilmington, N.C., for the final event of the fall schedule. The 'Cats close out the fall season against some strong competition as 13 of the 18 teams (including Northwestern) are ranked in the top 50 of the most recent Golfweek/Saragin rankings.
“I think this is one of the toughest fields we will play in all season, for sure for the fall and pretty much all year,” Northwestern head coach Emily Fletcher said. “We've made some good improvement up to this point, we're playing better, we're getting better, and we're starting to see some better results. This will be a good gauge for us to see where we are going into the winter.”
The field for this year's event includes No. 4 North Carolina, No. 12 Duke, No. 16 North Carolina State, No. 23 Virginia, No. 25 Ohio State, No. 28 Northwestern, No. 29 Florida State, No. 30 Mississippi, No. 31 South Carolina, No. 32 Michigan State, No. 36 Iowa State, No. 45 Wake Forest and No. 48 Tulane. UNC-Wilmington, Auburn, Chattanooga, Notre Dame and Purdue are also scheduled to compete.
The three-day event begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. CT and will be tee time starts the first two days while Sunday's competition begins with a shotgun at 9:30 a.m. CT. This is Northwestern's fourth year at the Landfall Tradition.
NU's fall lineup remains the same this weekend as senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows), sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and freshmen Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) and Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway) will compete for the Wildcats. Brown has been the top finisher for Northwestern in two of the three fall tournaments and has placed in the top 20 in all three.
“Devon's coming off three really good starts this fall, Lauren's really starting to score better, Brittany and Hana are hanging in there and so is Alex, so we feel pretty good about the five that we're taking,” Fletcher said. “We're looking to step up in this field and play well.”
This is Northwestern's first competition since tying for sixth at its own Windy City Collegiate Championship from Oct. 3-4. The Wildcats have had a solid fall season so far, finishing in the top 10 at all three tournaments, including a third place finish at the season-opening Dale McNamara Invitational.
