EVANSTON, Ill. -- After three weeks out of competition, the Northwestern fencing team will be back in action this weekend as the program hosts the United States Fencing Association Remenyik Open at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion on the Evanston campus.
The Remenyik Open will bring together over 400 fencers of varying skill levels from around the country, including Elizabeth Kokab, the 2011 Women's Épée Veteran National Champion. The event serves as a qualifier for the Division IA National Championships, which will take place in Dallas, Texas and the end of June and the beginning of July. The top-eight or top-25 percent in each weapon will qualify for the prestigious event.
Earlier this month on Oct. 1, the Wildcats lifted the lid on the season at the USFA Burton Open. During that one-day competition, Northwestern captured gold medals in all three weapons, as well as silver medals in both the foil and sabre. Chloe Grainger (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) topped Alicia Gurrieri (Medford, N.J./Moorestown Friends) in the sabre final, while Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) won the foil finale against teammate Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt). Newcomer Courtney Dumas (Cleveland, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) claimed the top spot with the epée.
The Remenyik Open is widely considered to be the largest fencing event in the Midwest and was one of the first to be sanctioned as a Regional Open Circuit (ROC) event. The competition will begin Saturday morning at approximately 8 a.m. and continues through Sunday.
