LOS ANGELES -- Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, Northwestern's top-ranked doubles pairing, continued to advance through the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships at Riviera Tennis Club Friday by knocking off Sacramento State's entry, 8-4.
Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) entered the weekend as the No. 3-ranked doubles team according to the Campbell's/ITA preseason list and the second-seeded pair in this tournament.
After a first-round bye in the main draw on Thursday, Mushrefova and Hamilton doubled-up Sacramento State's team of Rebecca Delgado and Tatsiana Kapshai, 8-4, in the round of 16 on Friday. Next up for Mushrefova and Hamilton will be Wake Forest's team of Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert on Saturday. Duncan and Talbert are the sixth seed in the draw at the All-American Championships. That match is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the winner will advance to the semifinal round later in the afternoon at 5 p.m.
Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) was also in action Friday in the consolation bracket of the main draw. There, the Northwestern junior faced off with Stanford's Stacey Tan who is ranked No. 12 in the Campbell's/ITA singles rankings. Turvy, ranked No. 53 in the fall listings, took the first set against Tan, 6-2. In the second set, the Dublin, Ohio, native fell behind early and lost, 5-7. Turvy roared back with authority in the decisive third set and blanked Tan, 6-0.
Turvy's reward was a short turnaround and a date with Washington's Denis Dy, the second-ranked player in the consolation field. Dy, an All-American, claimed victory in the opening set, 6-3, but NU's Turvy won an epic second set tiebreak 7-6. Unfortunately for the Wildcat, she ran out of momentum in the third set and bowed out against Dy, 6-4, ending her run in the tournament.
