EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will host the 15th Windon Memorial Classic Sunday and Monday, Oct. 16-17, at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill. The 17-team field features several of the nation's top collegiate programs and golfers.
In addition to Northwestern, Golfweek's preseason No. 2 team UCLA and sophomore Bruin Patrick Cantlay -- the world's No. 1 ranked amateur player -- are in the field along with Golfweek's current No. 3 team Arkansas, which has won its first two tourneys of the 2011-12 schedule.
Big Ten schools Indiana, Michigan (which won last year's Windon Memorial Classic), Penn State and Purdue will compete in the tournament while Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Harvard, Idaho, Loyola (Chicago), Marquette, Marshall and Pepperdine round out the field.
Teams will play 36 holes Sunday, Oct. 16, with a shotgun start in the morning. The final round on Monday, Oct. 17, will feature a tee-time start off both the front and back nines. Evanston Golf Club will play to a par-70, 6,793-yard layout for the tournament.
Northwestern's team is led by senior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School), who finished in second place in the Wildcats' first tourney of the year at Marshall. He is coming off a T14 performance at the Asian Amateur Championship in Singapore last week where he fired a 72-hole score of 5-under 283. Chun's performance moved him into the top-200 in the current World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Evanston Golf Club is playing host to the Windon for the first time. Long a supporter of NU golf, Evanston hosted the 2008 Northwestern women's event, the Windy City Collegiate Classic. Evanston Golf Club is a par-70 Donald Ross design opened in 1917 and restored by Donald Ross' restoration expert Ron Pritchard in 2006. NU alum and current World No. 1 Luke Donald holds the current Evanston Golf Club course record of 63 on the redesigned tract.
The Windon has an illustrious history, with current PGA TOUR members Donald, Joe Ogilvie, Tiger Woods, Gary Woodland and Ben Curtis finishing as runners-up in the event. Donald and current PGA TOUR members Hunter Mahan and Colt Knost are past champions.
Last year's Windon Memorial Classic featured an incredible final round with an ace from one competitor, a 9-under par team charge from Ohio State and a 40-foot par putt from Michigan's Lion Kim on the 54th hole to hold off the Buckeyes by one stroke for a Wolverine victory.
Northwestern has won three team titles at the Windon, most recently in 2007 at Lake Shore Country Club. Prior to hosting the Windon, NU will hit the course competitively October 9-11 at The Prestige at PGA West.
