GOLF, Ill. -- Northwestern hosted the opening two rounds of the 2011 Windy City Collegiate Classic Monday at the Glen View Club and is tied for fourth after the first day. The Wildcats finished day one with a 22-over 598, beginning with a 301 in the first round and making a four-shot improvement to 297 in the second.
Northwestern is tied with New Mexico for fourth place while Oklahoma State leads the field with a 13-over 589 (291-298). Arizona (19-over 595) and Ohio State (20-over 596) are second and third, respectively. Individually, Tulsa's Kristina Merkle leads the field with a 2-under 142 after shooting a 1-under 71 in both rounds.
Two Wildcats are tied for 16th and leading the way for Northwestern. Sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) finished the first two rounds with a 4-over 148. Brown birdied three holes, bogeyed four, in the first round and ended up with a 1-over 73 and registered a 3-over 75 in the second round. Weaver began with an on-par 72 in the first round, finishing with three birdies to negate an early double bogey. In the second round, Weaver shot a 4-over 76.
Freshman Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) is out to a solid start, tying for 20th after the first day with a 5-over 149. Lee had a 4-over 76 in the first and shot a 1-over 73 in the second. Lee had nine birdies combined in the opening two rounds.
Freshman Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway) tied for 38th with a 9-over 153. Mai opened the first round with an 8-over 80 but improved seven strokes in the second round, finishing 1-over 73. Mai birdied on holes one, six, seven and nine in round two.
Senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale) rounded out the team competitors for Northwestern in a tie for 59th with a 13-over 157. Lederhausen began with a 9-over 81 and improved to a 4-over 76 in the second round.
Junior Mei Liu (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis), junior Anne Ormson (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph's) and freshman Katie Wooliver (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) competed as individuals. Liu tied for 64th, shooting a 14-over 158 (84-74), Ormson tied for 72nd with an 18-over 162 (77-85) and Wooliver is in 79th with a 28-over 172 (83-89).
The third and final round of the 2011 Windy City Collegiate Classic begins at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.
