WINNETKA, Ill. -- On day two of the Wildcat Invitational the focus turned to four singles flights with a full slate of action on tap. Linda Abu Mushrefova, Nida Hamilton and Natalie Edell each competed for the 'Cats with great results to show for it.
Mushrefova, who teamed with Hamilton to capture yesterday's doubles top flight crown, posted a pair of wins Saturday. In the opening round of flight `A' she fought with Iowa's Shelby Talcott in an epic match. Talcott won the first set 7-5, but the NU junior fought back to win 7-6 (two in the breaker) and 6-2. In her second round match, Mushrefova knocked off DePaul's Kelsey Lawson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Hamilton represented the Wildcats in flight `B' Saturday. The sophomore did not drop a set all afternoon in a pair of victories. First, Hamilton disposed of Minnesota's Julia Courter, 6-2 and 6-2. Later, it was Oklahoma's Mia Lancaster who stood in the way, but the Oak Brook, Ill., native cruised 6-4 and 6-2.
Senior Natalie Edell represented Northwestern in flight `C' at Nielsen Tennis Center. Edell stumbled against Michigan State's Julianne Gruber, 6-2 and 6-0. She would bounce back later on the other side of the draw, however, winning against Iowa's Christina Harazin, 6-3 and 7-5.
Play resumes on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The competitors are scheduled to play one round of singles play.
