EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sets out to match last week's strong first performance of the season when it travels to the Huskie Open hosted by Northern Illinois on Saturday. Start time for the women's 5K race in DeKalb is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
Head coach April Likhite's squad is one of 10 teams slated to compete on Saturday, joining the likes of Creighton, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Saint Louis and other regional schools. The race will give Northwestern an important preview of the site of the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional Championship in which the 'Cats will compete on Nov. 12.
The last time the Wildcats entered the fray at the Huskie Open they walked away winners, topping a nine-team field in 2009 when then-freshman Allegra Mayer led NU with a third-place individual finish. Audrey Huth was second for the 'Cats that day and sixth overall.
Huth Named Big Ten Co-Runner of the Week
Northwestern junior Audrey Huth (Shelby, Mich./Utica) is the co-recipient of the inaugural Big Ten Runner of the Week honor of the 2011 season, the conference announced on Tuesday. Huth took first place at the season-opening 5K Crusader Open, helping the Wildcats also claim first in the meet's team standings. Huth is the first Northwestern runner to receive the conference's weekly laurel since Rachel Evjen in 2001. She shares the honor this week with Penn State senior Caitlin Lane.
