COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State scored a goal in each half as the Buckeyes defeated Northwestern 2-0 in the Wildcats' third game of the Big Ten Conference season.
"We were dealt a massive challenge with our first three Big Ten games on the road," Northwestern head coach Stephanie Foster said. "I'm so proud of the fight and soccer we put out there today against a Final Four team from a year ago. We need to see the ball hit the back of the net for us and we're back in business when we compete like we did today."
Northwestern finished with six shots and had two on goal. Freshman midfielder Georgia Waddle (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), who had two shots in Friday's match against Penn State, had a look in the first half that was saved by OSU goalkeeper Katie Baumgardner and senior forward Caroline Dagley (San Rafael, Calif./The Branson School) had a shot in the second half. Ohio State finished with 18 shots, four on goal.
OSU found the back of the net first on a goal by Tiffany Cameron in the 42nd minute. Kristen Niederhaus and Caitlyn Martin were credited with the assist. The Buckeyes had the 13-4 advantage in shots in the first frame, but were whistled for offsides four times. NU freshman goalkeeper Anna Cassell (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) saved two shots in the first half.
The Buckeyes recorded their second goal in the 77th minute as Paige Maxwell scored on a loose ball in the box and finished from 10 yards out. Caroline Murray was in on the assist. Ohio State outshot Northwestern 5-2 in the second frame.
Northwestern continues Big Ten action and returns home to host Purdue at Lakeside Field at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. After a three-game road swing, the Wildcats will play six of their final eight games at home.
