BUCHAREST, Romania -- Northwestern redshirt freshman and U.S. Junior national champion Lee Munster is set to compete at the 2011 Junior World Championships this week in Bucharest, Romania. Munster is the U.S. team's representative at 84 kg and will open his tournament Sunday.
FILA Juniors are athletes who are 17-20 years old. Many of the athletes who are successful at the Junior World Championships go on to win World and Olympic medals for their nations.
There are 54 nations slated to compete in this year's event.
Munster became the first U.S. World Team member from Northwestern since Anthony Pariano -- older brother of NU head coach Drew Pariano -- in 1993 when he took first place at the World Team Trials on May 20.
During Munster's redshirt season at NU in 2010-11, the Fox Lake, Ill., native compiled a 14-4 record, winning the Wisconsin Open and placing second at both the Cleveland State Open and Eastern Michigan Open. After the season, Munster defended his title as University Nationals champion before taking first at the Junior World Team Trials.
