Northwestern University is set to host its annual Relay For Life event to benefit the American Cancer Society this Friday and Saturday at the NU Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center (SPAC).
The event was established to raise awareness about cancer-related issues while raising money to help fight the disease through research, education, advocacy and services.
The NU community raised $119,751 during last year's event with the Northwestern men's basketball team bringing in nearly $10,000 of that total to place first out of 71 groups across campus.
Wildcat teams participating in this year's efforts include men's basketball, women's soccer, field hockey, fencing and football.
The American Cancer Society has a history of supporting Northwestern University researchers and because of the ongoing research in cancer related issues, Northwestern and the American Cancer Society will no doubt remain partners in eliminating cancer.
Friday's opening ceremonies are set for 7 p.m. which includes a game of knock-out with members of the Wildcat men's basketball team that individuals can participate in for just $1. A special luminaria ceremony is set for 10 p.m. to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who have been lost to cancer.
